A perfect base for exploring the region

Nature parks, UNESCO World Heritage and other ancient sites

Sicily is well-known the world over for its cultural and natural heritage sites. Casa Nettuno is an ideal base from which to explore cities such as Ragusa, Scicli, Modica, Syracuse or sights such as the Necropolis of Pantalica, Val di Noto and Vendicari.

Vendicari

Nature reserve
This is a stopping point for migratory birds such as flamingos, herons, storks and cormorants on their way to and from Africa. Terns, ducks, mallards and pintails can also be seen in winter. A paradise for bird-watchers. The tonnara (an 18th century tuna fish factory), as well as the ancient salt pans, are well worth a visit.

Val di Noto

Late Baroque towns
Val di Noto is known for its spectacular landscapes and beautiful Baroque towns (Modica, Noto, Palazzolo, Scicli and particularly Ragusa Ibla). Ragusa Ibla is the only city in the world that has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Syracuse

The "secret" European
Capital of Culture
Discovering Syracuse is like journeying back into Sicily’s ancient Greek epoch. The Parco Archeologico with its Greek theatre, Roman amphitheatre, the ear of Dionysius, Archimedes' grave, the temples of Apollo and Athena, and much more besides. A visit to the old town "Ortigia" located on the peninsula is an absolute must. It is no coincidence that Syracuse has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2005.

Experience Sicily through the eyes of a local

Get to know Sicily as it really is.

There are many ways to explore a country. You can either leave everything to a tour operator and see the sights from a tourist's perspective; or you can be guided by a local who will show you all the cultural highlights and, at the same time, teach you something about the population and its mentality.

Orlando Pavano runs Casa Nettuno. He spent a large part of his life in Switzerland before deciding to follow his inner voice and settle in his native Sicily. He knows the island and its people and he can tell you much about its history. But perhaps most importantly, he can tell you about day-to-day life in Sicily. Should you wish, he will be happy to be your guide in Sicily and share with you in English his inside knowledge of, and enthusiasm for his island.
